About Alexandru Costiuc, Owner of Atelier Woodwork, Inc.
Born in Romania, Alexandru Costiuc knows firsthand the rigors of traditional European apprenticeship. He attended the School of Arts in Sibiu-Hemanstadt, where he studied sculpture in wood and clay, hand carving and plaster casting works of art in varied sizes. The four-year apprenticeship with German master craftsmen that followed gave him thorough, firsthand experience in fine furniture.
Alexandru left Romania and settled in New York City. After working for several years with renowned New York architectural woodworking firms, he founded his company whose clients included architects, interior designers and building contractors. He specialized in commercial and residential projects.
After living in New York for 10 years, Alexandru moved to Palm Beach County attracted by Florida's beauty and warmth. After establishing his new shop in Wellington, Alexandru was commissioned to do work for some of the world renowned names such as Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace, actor Sylvester Stallone, developer Thomas Krammer and others.
Most of his work afterwards was concentrated on the island of Palm Beach. Both residential and large commercial projects, such as the exclusive waterfront condominium residences, Il Lugano, brought a sense of accomplishment. However, Alexandru wanted to be integrated in the island's history. He had a daring desire to be part of a Palm Beach historic landmark renovation, namely the prestigious Brazilian Court Hotel built in the glory days of the '20s in rich Mediterranean style and detail, working closely with owner and decorator Leslie Shiesinger. Today, after years of involvement, Alexandru is part of its future. Every piece of woodwork carries his touch.
Even though his work has been featured in Architectural Digest, local magazines and newspapers, Alexandru's greatest success is maintaining a humble and casual attitude. After 26 years of being in business, he is proud however to be part of a guild that is regretfully facing extinction. Whether a kitchen or a historic landmark, Alexandru remains focused on detail, satisfaction and timely production. His shop, Atelier, remains the place where craftsmanship meets excellence.
